As a diver, there are many precautions we take in order to ensure our safety. There are many hazards we can face on a dive, from the marine life, to our equipment. Some incidents are common, and can be easily handled, or avoided, as long as the diver is vigilant. For example, divers are trained to evaluate equipment, make interval stops to avoid a serious condition called “the bends”, and know what sea life could pose a potential threat. If you’re aware of your surroundings, you will likely not run into any problems during a dive. Sometimes, however, no matter how careful we are, accidents can happen. Unforeseen accidents are often those we can’t control, or those we can’t see coming. Regardless, if you’ve been injured at no fault of your own, you should be aware of your rights. In order to seek out rightful compensation, you will need to file a claim. You may have heard of accident claims, but aren’t sure how they can apply to divers.

If you’re a dive instructor, or a professional diver, and are hurt on the job, you qualify to receive compensation for your injury. This is a workplace accident, and they are very common in various careers, especially those that are physically demanding or put you in uncommon or high risk circumstances, which includes scuba diving.

If you’re on vacation, and you suffer an accident during a dive trip, you are also entitled to personal injury compensation. Whether you slip at the hotel, or are injured due to the negligence of a dive instructor or other diver.

These are all common scenarios where you could sustain serious injury. As a diver, you likely purchase insurance for your vacation, dive trip and more, but if something does happen, you should know how to file a claim.

Scuba diving is all about the location. Discovering strange and unfamiliar waters is what makes the adventure exciting. Unfortunately, many diving destinations offer the same, or very similar experiences. Most divers travel to tropical, warm waters where they can explore colorful reefs and exotic fish, but others want a more unique diving experience. For the experienced diver, this can be difficult to come by. Finding a diving destination that boasts completely unique and exciting dives can be a challenge, especially for adventurous divers that are always looking for the next thrill; Antarctica can offer all of this, and more.

Full of intriguing wildlife, this continent has brought in adventure seekers from all over the globe. You can not only experience ice dives, and explore the under water sights, but also appreciate the diverse wildlife above water as well. The best time to visit would be between November and March, which is the Summer period for the southern hemisphere. This is when you will be able to see penguins and their chicks, different species of seals, Humpback wales and many others. With the extended daylight hours, you will be able to enjoy light well through the night, which is ideal for photographers. Not to mention the exciting opportunity to witness the Aurora Australis.

Getting to Antarctica is much more convenient than you might think; flights often depart from South America, including Argentina and Chile, and there are plenty of all inclusive packages available online for Divers. Although these packages include the majority of costs involved with the trip, you will always need to book your own overseas travel insurance. As with any trip, you will want to have a policy that will cover every possible scenario, and help you avoid any possible losses. Booking your insurance separate is an important part of preparing for your trip, especially for Divers.

Although the gloomy islands of the United Kingdom may not be your first thought when it comes to diving destinations, you might be surprised just how much they have to offer. Scuba diving has only been growing in popularity in the United Kingdom, with many diving schools, live aboard trips, and excursions spanning all of it’s countries; including the very diverse Scotland.

Scotland is home to many busy cities that offer convenient departure points for dive trips to many surrounding destinations. Those who are interested in anything from cave dives, to wreck dives, or even wall dives will truly appreciate all of the adventures this country has to offer. Divers come from all over to see the sunken wreckage of many World War I vessels, including the Jambo and the Boston Sterling, among others. Even if you’re looking to get certified, you can do so through any of the many dive schools available.

Scotland has long been a popular tourist destination for travelers from all over the world, and for many reasons. Some come for the culture, the food, the sights, or the big cities. Although there is plenty to see and do on the surface, Scotland has stunning underwater attractions to enjoy, as well. Divers can enjoy comfortable and convenient accommodation at the Highlands Hotel, and spend the day exploring Cathedral Cave, or take a boat tour to the Summer Isles. You can explore the Innisjura on a wreck dive, or discover the Lochaline. For the more adventurous: book a live aboard trip for extended dives, and experience diverse locations outside Scotland.

Scuba divers have plenty to see and do in Scotland, and those looking to learn won’t have a hard time getting certified. Although many come for Glasgow’s nightlife, or Edinburgh’s history, Scotland’s underwater attractions won’t fail to disappoint, either.

Whether you are new to snorkeling or consider yourself an Old Hat, the Great Barrier Reef is, hands down, one of the best places in the world to snorkel. The reasons are many so I will limit them to the top 5 (in no particular order). While I am relatively new to snorkeling, my best friend is an Old Hat and, between the 2 of us, we have been to many snorkeling sites around the world.

The Great Barrier Reef is beautiful. That alone should be reason enough to head to this spectacular place. Ignoring the fact that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, anyone you talk to (who has been there) will attest to the beauty and wonder of the Reef.

It is a nature enthusiasts dream. The Great Barrier Reef is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. Large enough to be seen from space, the Reef is home to 400 different coral species (including soft and hard corals in a variety of gorgeous colors), 1,500 different species of fish, 215 species of birds and other glorious forms of wildlife like whales, dolphins, sea turtles, nudibranchs, pipefish, starfish and seahorses. Warm crystal clear waters and sunshine almost every day add to this memorable icon of Australia.

There are many choices of snorkeling sites as well as ways to get there. There are all sorts of day trips to choose from at the Reef. As fun as it is to jump off the boat, a popular choice, another great choice is to choose a company that can take you to an island or a sandy cay where you can walk into the water from the beach. For the newbie’s, there is the option of a float coat which allows the wearer to bob around or snorkeling in an area with resting buoys.

Why start in Cairns? You will hear that Cairns is the best place to begin your introduction to the Great Barrier Reef. This is because Cairns is known as the Reef’s diving and snorkeling capital. A benefit of this is that Cairns is filled with competing companies so there are deals to be found. Shopping around will save you money which, in turn, allows for more days of snorkeling.

You can even sleep out on the Great Barrier Reef! There is more to boating companies than day trips at the Reef. There are companies that will take you out for multiple days and nights of nonstop snorkeling. Snorkel in the day and see a million stars at night. Get to know the Reef up and close and personal by choosing a Live Aboard Cruise. This is a great way to experience many snorkeling sites in just a few days while relaxing and enjoying life on sea.

Whichever snorkeling sites you decide on, you cannot go wrong adventuring at the Great Barrier Reef. Turquoise waters, sandy beaches, schools of brightly colored fish and a medley of corals in different shades and hues make the Great Barrier Reef a top destination for snorkelers. Other than clothing, sunscreen, a hat and direct travel insurance (a must for wise travelers) about the only other thing I would recommend is an underwater camera to record your beautiful snorkeling experiences.

When you think about scuba diving your mind inevitably wanders off towards tropical destinations, coral reefs or deep blue waters full of sunken ships. But this isn’t all that scuba enthusiasts have to look forward to; many of you might be surprised to hear that there are some very interesting diving destinations outside this beaten path, and one of them is none other than the beautiful town of Edinburgh in Scotland.

This absolutely gorgeous town has for long brought in tourists from all walks of life for its beautiful architecture, its history and importance, but also for its cultural activities and fresh, young nightlife. Being the capital of Scotland and one of the biggest cities in the United Kingdom there’s no lack of places to stay in town, and you can choose from a long list of quality hostels or hotels. Edinburgh apartments are also available for holiday rentals, which can be an interesting option as well. Access to the city is also quite easy, either via Edinburgh Airport, major highways that service the city or by train or coach.

Of course none of this seems to matter greatly to the scuba diver, but knowing that a scuba destination has great services to offer is always a plus. Also, for the big groups looking for group accommodation Edinburgh may be an easier and cheaper destination than many well known scuba hotspots.

As far as the diving per se, the city offers an interesting range of diving schools where you can do practically anything, from learning the basics of diving in a controlled environment to professional courses. And then, of course, there are the diving trips that the schools organize. With so many diving enthusiasts in the city and the surrounding country and with the people coming from abroad, the offer for diving trips is quite vast. You can go somewhere close like the Lochaline or St. Abb’s Marine Resort, or you can choose to take a lengthier trip to another country, knowing that you’ll have the excellent organization behind you.

Just off the coast of Thailand, in the Andaman Sea, lys one of the world’s most coveted scuba diving destinations. This diving haven has long been a favorite of divers from across the world, flocking in from every corner of the globe to see it’s stunning underwater sights. Phuket has picturesque coastlines, vibrant and diverse sea life, ideal diving conditions, and plenty of unique opportunities for divers to enjoy. Everything from liveaboards, to day trips, to shark dives and more can be found here.
Phuket is a world renowned tourist destination; with it’s stunning beaches and coastline, to it’s food and luxurious resorts. None of these attractions, however, match the beauty that can be found under the surface. Anemone Reef, for example, is one of the most colorful and diverse ecosystems in the world. Here you can find, as indicated by it’s name, an abundance of anemones and anemone fish, not to mention lionfish and leopard sharks. If you want to experience sharks up close, you can visit the neighboring site appropriately named “Shark Point”, which is home to hundreds of tame sharks, including the leopard shark that thrives in this area. There are also plenty areas with opportunities to see turtles, manta rays, tiger and nurse sharks, and a vibrant reef spanning miles.

Scuba diving in Phuket is one of the most diverse and exciting activities you’ll ever experience, with an abundance of sights to visit, and dives to try. Themed dives of all kinds bring in divers all year long, whether it be for shark dives, wreck dives, reef dives, liveaboards, or just day trips departing from Phuket shore. Explore all the surrounding sights, underwater attractions, breath taking sea life, and calm, clear waters Phuket has to offer. Few islands rival this top diving destination, with a broad selection of activities and experiences that are sure to deliver, even above and beyond your wildest expectations.

Although Australia is most famously known for the Great Barrier Reef in the Northeast, there are many other hidden gems that are waiting to be discovered. Scuba diving is at it’s best in Australia, with an abundance of sights, pristine conditions, agreeable weather year around, and diverse sea life. Although there are some dive sights that are well known, there are plenty of more remote diving destinations that boast unique, untouched beauty. These underwater treasures include: lush coral gardens, vibrant sea life, diverse reefs and landscape with various lagoons and canyons to discover. Come face to face with fearless humpback wales, swim with manta rays, and observe hammerhead sharks and large schools of fish. Enjoy the colorful and breath taking reefs, featuring many types of coral and sea life, found in Rowley Shoals, and many other different reefs.

Western Australia has many sights that are so remote, they are reachable only by dive boats called liveaboards. These boats offer extended dive trips, often covering several destinations, with facilities that support overnight stays. International visitors can fly into Northern Perth, and depart on a chartered boat from Broome. Aboard these boats, you can experience some of this country’s most pristine, and untouched sights that few know of. With beauty, sea life, and reefs that rival that of the well known Great Barrier Reef, you’ll have all of the sights, with none of the crowds. You can discover Mermaid Reef or the Rowley Shoals, all with varying conditions and sea life. There are various dive boats that offer convenient trips and access to all these sights, and many other destinations across Western Australia. International divers flying in from outside the country should also consider purchasing travelers insurance, which is specific to the needs of foreigners visiting Australia. Discount travel insurance can be purchased for any trip, at any time of the year.

For divers who have already visited the most well known sights in Australia, there are plenty of other wonders you’ve yet to discover. The beauty of Australia’s waters goes well beyond that of just the Barrier Reef, with plenty of other diving experiences to be found in every region. Find out more information concerning the sights of Western Australia on this site, where you can learn about the types of sea life, all the reefs, and other useful information.

There are many popular diving destinations across the world, but none more popular than those found on islands. Many islands provide the most ideal conditions for scuba diving, including clear, warm waters, and diverse sea life. If you’re looking for the most iconic diving trip possible, you should look into the exotic and remote islands of the world. Many of these islands provide lessons for those interested in learning, and specialty trips for seasoned divers. Accommodation options are also in abundance, many of which are budget friendly and luxurious, and cater specifically to divers.

The Spanish Canary Islands are by far one of the most popular holiday destinations among all kinds of travelers, but especially among scuba divers. Tenerife in particular is a favorite among divers, who plan Playa de las Americas holidays and enjoy all the scuba diving opportunities available. Visibility conditions are fantastic around the Canary Islands, with calm waters and plenty of under water sights to explore. On shore, you can enjoy modern facilities, your choice of accommodation, night life, restaurants and more. Tenerife has long been a coveted holiday destination for tourists from all over the world, but scuba divers particularly enjoy the sights and attractions this island has to offer.

Other tropical islands that provide promising diving conditions include the Bahamas, Fiji, and other exotic locations. Because these destinations are so popular among holiday goers, divers find a wide range of selection and options. You can choose from budget friendly accommodation, to luxury resorts. You can receive your diving license while on a holiday, or enjoy challenging dive trips in picturesque locations. Discover unique themed dives, such as wreck dives, or shark dives.

When many of us think about an Octopus, we think about the famous octopus Paul, who predicted the outcome of the matches during the World Cup of football (or soccer). This octopus hailed from Germany, and was accurate in predicting the outcome of several matches, all the way up to the final match, determining the winner of the World Cup. This octopus was on loan from an aquarium, who presented Paul with two feeding boxes, each with the flag of the team playing in a given match. Which ever box he chose to eat from, would be the winner.

Although we don’t often hear about Octopi, there are many issues facing these invertebrates today. Few species of Octopus are endangered, but one that is is the Giant Pacific Octopus. The Giant Octopus is an endangered species, and can only be saved by awareness and charitable acts. The Giant Octopus is harmless, many encounters result in little more than vague curiosity. Because they are commercially fished, their numbers are few. They can only be found in the North Pacific, ranging from the Californian coast, to Japan.

Thanks to the habitats found in various aquariums, including Monterey Bay Aquarium, this species will have a fighting chance. Many aquariums have also donated to this endangered species, hoping their numbers won’t continue to plummet. These fascinating invertebrates can also be found in the New York Aquarium, Baltimore Aquarium, and New England Aquarium.
