Just the idea of wreck diving can create thoughts of the dark, mysterious unknown in anyone’s mind. Although it can be awe-inspiring and even educational, it can also carry much greater risks. Typically, most wrecks are ships and boats. History tells us most ships were sunk accidentally but today the Navy purposely scuttles vessels to the benefit of recreational divers.
The variety of different types of ships that can be explored range from four hundred year old pirate ships to cruise liners and modern Navy warships. They all serve as spectacular artificial reefs to numerous fish who call it home. Diving the wrecks of airplanes is not uncommon, particularly fighter jets from World War II. The South Pacific holds many airplane wrecks with Truk Lagoon in Micronesia being the most famous.
